Or the Muslim Argentinian girl who was staying at the hostel while waiting to go first to Egypt and then the United Arab Emirates to visit her family for the first time. During the day she came veiled, sometimes accompanied by her father; at night she drank gallons of beer and partied in the discos of Cordoba. One of the last nights she came back completely drunk and wandered around the hostel in only a bra and tanga, which made things rather embarrassing, not only because she was so noisy and I had to tell her off so that other people could sleep. When I was living in Pakistan I was used to not being even able to speak to Muslim women, who knows how she will get on in the UAE.
Finally, here’s the story of a weird Argentinian man, Mr Malizia (Mr Mischief), whose surname was indeed quite appropriate. He came into the hostel with a woman and asked for a bed in a six-person dormitory. I took him to the room and when he noticed that there were also some girls there he asked me whether we had men-only dorms. I started to become suspicious and told him all that all the dormitories are mixed. When the situation became clear I explained to him that perhaps a private room was what he was looking for and convinced him to spend a little bit more.
