09/10/2011 Prima notte a Kathmandu / First night in Kathmandu

Good night Kathmandu !

I decided to go out early on my first evening here to see Kathmandu by night. After I had gone down just a few roads, the non-stop tooting and exhaust fumes of the cars and scooters barely missing me at every corner had become irritating. I saw a group of people and as I moved closer out of curiousity, I saw the first fight on my travels: a fashionably-dressed Nepalese girl was shouting at a young man and punching him in the face. Some of her family and friends were standing around him and occasionally taking a swing at him, too. I quickly realised that this city was not what I wanted to see of Nepal, so it was just as well that in two days I’d be moving on, into the surrounding valley.

I decided to go for a drink and, not knowing any pub in particular, walked in through the first doorway I came to, down a corridor and up a flight of stairs into Sam’s Pub. This was feebly lit by candles and really did seem like a non-European pub because of its unusual ethnic mix of regulars.
I went up to the bar and sat on the only empty stool, next to a Nepalese and an Israeli. The barmaid, who was Austrian, turned out to be the owner of the place as well as the dj. I had only gone there for an appetizer but ended up spending four hours there, chatting with an Israeli anthropologist named Drew, in Kathmandu to study globalisation. We drank with two Nepalese men who kept asking questions, the only rule being to talk not about politics but about life and to make toasts to it.

At a certain point, Drew and I realised it was getting late to eat, because all the places shut down around midnight. As we left the pub, we saw that most places were already closed but after a short walk we found a local eating place. After dinner, I said goodbye to Drew and headed back to the hostel through the streets that were by now half-empty and decidedly more hospitable
Good night Kathmandu!
